“Caring and Achieving Excellence in a Christian Community”
Elizabeth Furlong (Chair of Governors)

Category:
Foundation Governor
Date Appointed: 2018
Appointed By: Archdiocese
Term of Office: 4 Years

I have been on the Governing Body since 2009, originally as a parent and now a Foundation Governor. 10 years after qualifying as a primary school teacher I moved into the advisory service with a remit to take the Every Child Matters agenda into every school in south Sefton. I specialised in collecting and collating data from pupils and staff and facilitating schools to achieve the National Healthy Schools Award. I currently work for a Dyslexia charity supporting Higher Education students with learning difficulties through their tertiary education and beyond. I am a Catechist at St Helen’s church, Crosby. Elected as Chair of Governors in July 2020 I am passionate about inclusion, I believe that every pupil should feel they have voice in our school and what they say is listened to. I want our pupils to feel safe in school, to flourish in a Christian community and to leave having fulfilled their potential.

I have been part of the community of Sacred Heart Catholic College since 1990 when I was appointed to teach Science. During my 24 years on the staff I progressed to Head of Year, PSHE coordinator, SenCo and finally Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Inclusion. I also had the privilege to work closely with the PTA. I joined the Board of Governors in 2001 as staff Governor and once retired in 2014, became a co- opted governor, then Foundation Governor and now Local Authority appointed Governor. After a 30-year association with the school it is fair to say I know every nook and cranny of both buildings and have a thorough understanding of Sacred Heart’s values and traditions. I consider it a great privilege to be on the Governing Body and to serve all those who are part of our school.

I joined the Board of Governors as a Foundation Governor. I am the link Governor for Safeguarding and Behaviour. My professional background is in Health Care and I am currently a Community Matron within the local area. I am passionate about the future of the school and my aim is to continue to support it to improve the standards of education for present and future pupils.  I am proud to be able to say that both myself and my children attended the school and have a good understanding of the local area and feeder schools who apply to Sacred Heart. My main priority is making sure our children have a safe and secure environment in which to learn and to ensure they are given every opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

I have been a teacher at the College for 18 years, joining as an NQT. In my time I have held various positions of responsibility, including Head of Year and Head of Science. I am currently an Assistant Headteacher, overseeing teaching and learning .I feel given the various positions I have held in the college I am well placed to understand what areas we need to improve and how, in practical ways we can move forwards and continue to grow and improve further. We want young people and their parents to feel this College is a place in which all pupils can achieve their potential with high academic and vocational achievements and continuous high quality pastoral support; ensuring the character of each young person is fully developed in line with our College values that are rooted in our faith.

I was recently appointed as a Foundation Governor in September 2020. I have been a Catechist at St. Helen’s Parish for the past five years, preparing Year 4 children to receive the Sacraments. I am semi-retired and was formerly ran my own company in the glass industry specialising in stained glass and leaded light windows. First and foremost, I’m a mum of two boys who both currently attend Sacred Heart. Originally from Scotland, I moved to Liverpool to gain my degree and loved it so much that I never left! Professionally, I have worked in primary education in Liverpool for the past 22 years. I work for a small Multi Academy Trust, where I have a dual role of both Deputy Headteacher and Academy Director for Teaching, Learning and Standards across the Trust. One of my main responsibilities in this role is to audit provision, plan improvements and work alongside others to ensure the implementation of these improvements, providing both support and challenge as appropriate. I have also carried out such work as part of a team on both a formal and informal basis in a number of other primary schools. As our Trust has a behaviour unit which specialises in behaviour modification, I also have a particular interest in this area. I firmly believe that if you approach all aspects of school life with a “Children First” attitude, you’ll never go far wrong

I am a teacher and SENDCo at a primary school in Maghull. Previously I worked in a bank for 18 years completing a variety of roles. I have a particular interest in SEND and I also lead English within my school and am happy to link with both of these areas. I am interested in supporting links with the community. I attended Sacred Heart as a pupil and this is also where I met my husband. Our two boys also attended the school and Charlie was delighted to be head boy in 2018. My youngest son Sam is currently in y13. Both boys have enjoyed their time at the school and have achieved well both spiritually and academically. I chose to put myself forward to be a parent governor because I have a passion for the school and feel that I have relevant skills to offer.
